Arion Swiss Belhotel Bandung

The Arion Swiss Bel Hotel is a small hotel that offers smart and swish rooms close to the Bandung Railway Station.
Thankfully, the rooms are sound insulated. The Hotel is not particularly close to the fabulous shopping on offer in Bandung.
However, it is central enough, that a short taxi ride will take you to the Dago and Riau strip.
This small hotel offers all the modcons and comfort levels you would expect in a more expensive establishment.

Rooms are luxuriously appointed although the common areas are small.
The Café is not very big but service was attentive and the food well presented.
It serves excellent coffee.
The small swimming pool is on the rooftop.
The Arion Swiss Bel hotel is not very tall so there will not be any special views.
The family rooms are particularly spacious and you stay in a duplex suite with bedding on two floors.

If you can’t live without Internet, you can arrange for a computer to be installed
in your room. Naturally, the hotel has free Wifi.
This is an excellent value alternative to the bigger name Hotels in Bandung.

The Year of the Rabbit. The Chinese New Year begins on Feb 4 this year

The Year of the Rabbit conjures images of fluffy bunnies, but fortunetellers in Asia predict that the coming year on the Asian lunar calendar will be anything but cuddly.

Among key predictions for the new year beginning Feb. 3: terrorist threats, continuing tensions between China and the United States, natural disasters around the world and wobbly global markets.

Even Hollywood celebrity couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is not immune from the grim predictions. Both were born in Rabbit years, and one fortuneteller sees their longtime relationship coming under increasing strain as the year wears on.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, Asians from Hanoi to Harbin put great stock in the soothsayers' predictions using feng shui - the traditional practice of foretelling events through dates and classical texts.

In feng shui lore, the Year of the Rabbit is associated with the natural elements of metal and wood. This is a likely recipe for conflict, according to Hong Kong-based feng shui consultant Raymond Lo.

Taipei-based colleague Tsai Shang-chi goes even further.

This year the West will suffer from a vicious energy and will be prone to more terrorist attacks," Tsai said. "The East will also be affected by a negative energy, reflected in ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula."

While Tsai and Malaysian prognosticator Rev Yong offer assurances that the problems between North and South Korea won't escalate into all-out war, Yong is less sanguine about the chances for avoiding an onslaught of natural disasters. He foresees severe flooding around the world, a powerful earthquake in Japan and the emergence of a number of worrisome new diseases.

One of the upshots, he says, will be big problems for the global economy and the possibility of a major stock market plunge toward the middle of the year.

"People think the rabbit is very gentle, but it's not going to be a mild year at all," Yong said. "It won't be a good year. There will be a lot of world conflicts."

We are proud to bring you the Inaugural issue of itravelindonesia. The young team felt that it was time to go beyond just booking your discounted hotels and Indonesian domestic flights. So here we are.

In this Animal issue, we take a close look at my favourite destination in Indonesia, the Seminyak district in Bali. For our funky jilbabbers, Islamic fashion makes waves in London’s fashion week.

For the hordes of Indonesians flying to Singapore to shop and visit the doctors, we say there is more to Singapore than just Takashimaya and Mount Elizabeth.

Indonesians are the happiest people in the world. We look at a recent Norwegian survey that tells us that Indonesians smile more than anyone else on the Planet.

It is a modest start for us. In the next year, we will bring together articles that we hope will entertain, inform and bring you back. We hope that you will be a frequent visitor to itravelindonesia. As always, send us your feedback, kudos, and brickbats to cs@itravelindonesia.com.

Happy holidays.

Bandung Travel Guide and Bandung Hotels

Bandung,West Java and Bandung Hotels

Bandung rewards its visitors with cool nights, breathtaking volcanoes, superb Sundanese food and nightlife to rival that found in Jakarta. Bandung sits on a plateau 800m above sea level. Bandung is drier than Bogor and much cooler than Jakarta. Bandung is surrounded by a ring of volcanic mountains with Papandayan to the south and the mighty Tangkuban Perahu dominating the Northern skyline.

Tangkuban Perahu is 'volcano made easy' as you can drive all the way to the crater rim from Bandung. No need for hour long treks to look into the heart of fire. New Zealenders will find the smell of sulphur familiar. Visit Ciater Hot Springs after dark. Crisp mountain air whilst soaking in a hot spring is as close as you can get to heaven.

Bandung is also the fashion capital of Indonesia. No trip to Bandung is complete without a quick trip to Rumah Mode or Heritage , the 2 best stocked factory outlets. Fashion in Bandung is stylish, high quality and at a price that would bring a smile to folks back home. Jalan Cihampelas is 'Jeans Street' where shops entice you to enter using 5 m high effigies from kitschy Rambos to Spiderman figurines. Jalan Dago and Jalan Riau are the factory outlet centre's.

Jalan Braga and the stately Savoy Homan Hotel retain its Art Deco architecture when Bandung was the getaway for the Dutch colonials retreating from the heat of Jakarta. Bandung was the site of the first Asian African conference, and the conference hall is now a small museum. The old cafes along Braga allow you to eat creamed puffs, klappentaarts , and sip your lattes in a bygone era.

Bandung has alot of night life. Sundown brings Jalan Braga to life . The junction at the north end has a range of Dangdut discos, rock joints and lively bars and drinking holes playing Top 40s. Try Classic Rock, Rumpoet, Escobar and Violet for a night out.

For more cultural pursuits check out an angklung performance and Jaipongan dance. Bandung is the centre of Sundanese culture. Angklung show's a held at Pak Ujo Saung Angklung and you can watch Wayang Golek,Jaipongan,Pencak Silat and Ketoprak at the Rumentang Siang art Center.
